Kia Motors Corporation has released the first official photos of the next generation Picanto city car, which now offers a bolder, more mature and more self confident look.

Completely redesigned and re-engineered, the new car has grown in overall length and wheelbase and is set to redefine its position as one of the most competitive vehicles in its segment.

Kia’s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, said, “In profile, new Picanto features significant sculpting and a very prominent rising character line. The result is a layering of light and shadow and this breaks up the height, giving the car a more sure-footed stance.”

While the current Picanto is available only as a five-door hatchback, the next generation version will be offered as a five-door globally while a sportier three-door body style will also be marketed in Europe.

The new Picanto will feature four all-new powertrains in 1.0- and 1.2-liter displacements, all boasting class leading CO2 emissions levels. In addition to petrol engines, LPG bi-fuel and flex fuel variations will be available depending on market.

The next generation Picanto will be officially unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2011.

2011 KIA OPTIMA HYBRID

IRVINE, Calif.,- As the latest model in Kia's design-led transformation, the all-new 2011 Optima midsize sedan lineup expanded today with Kia Motors America's (KMA) introduction of the all-new Optima Hybrid at the Los Angeles Auto Show. With a stunning design, roomy interior, and an estimated 40 mpg class-leading fuel efficiency, Kia's first-ever hybrid in the U.S. will attract those looking for a striking and well-equipped sedan that does not sacrifice style, comfort, performance or value for fuel efficiency. Set to hit showrooms early next year, the Optima Hybrid employs a Kia-developed powertrain that includes several innovations that enable it to provide exceptional hybrid performance and efficiency.

"Kia Motors is aggressively expanding its green car investments and R&D in much the same way we committed ourselves to the quality and design innovations over the last decade that have fueled our dramatic brand transformation," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. The 2011 Optima Hybrid uses a full parallel hybrid system and can be driven in zero emission, full-electric drive mode at speeds up to 62 miles per hour or in blended gas-electric mode at any speed. When the car comes to a stop and the electrical load is low, the engine shuts off to completely eliminate idle fuel consumption and emissions.

Durable Lithium Polymer Battery

The 2011 Optima Hybrid's outstanding efficiency is due in large part to the use of a lithium polymer battery, which was developed in South Korea with partner LG Chem. The power and energy density of this new battery type allowed Kia engineers to create a lighter and more compact battery pack, with the 30 kilowatt battery pack weighing just 95.9 pounds – 28 pounds less than the 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid's nickel metal hydride pack – which aids fuel economy and also helps to maximize Optima's cargo space.

The Optima Hybrid's battery will hold its charge up to 25 percent longer than hybrids with nickel metal hydride batteries, so the battery is more likely to have usable energy available even if it has not been in use. Both fuel consumption and emissions are cut, allowing more electric starts and drive-aways. With that improved efficiency, more of the recovered kinetic energy and charging energy from the engine is available to move the car as necessary, which allows the vehicle to provide electric driving assist more often and for a longer period. Lithium polymer also has less of the self-discharge characteristic found in most rechargeable batteries.

Unique Hybrid Architecture

Unlike most current systems on the market, the Optima Hybrid powertrain is configured with a unique architecture. Compared to the power-split hybrid systems found on vehicles from Toyota or Ford, the Optima Hybrid uses a Transmission-Mounted-Electric-Drive (TMED) layout with the electric motor separated from the transmission gear-set. Offering several advantages, this modular layout includes more efficient powertrain packaging, use of many "off-the-shelf" components such as the existing six-speed automatic transmission found on the 2.4-liter GDI Optima, and reduced engineering investment. This also allows for other possible future combinations including the application of more powerful motors and higher capacity batteries.

The Optima Hybrid also is among the first full hybrid systems on the market to use a typical step-ratio automatic transmission. The extremely compact six-speed automatic that debuted on the 2011 Kia Sorento CUV is carried over to the hybrid largely unchanged. An external electrically-driven oil pump also has been added to provide the hydraulic fluid pressure needed to keep the clutches engaged when the vehicle is in idle stop mode.

The Optima Hybrid's electric motor is hard-coupled to the input of the transmission and equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous electric traction motor that produces 40.2 horsepower (30 kilowatt) and 151.2 pound-feet of torque when electric only, and an impressive 206.2 horsepower and 195.4 pound-feet of torque when in hybrid mode. This replaces the torque converter, with a multi-disc clutch is fitted between the engine and motor, enabling the gasoling engine to be de-coupled from the powertrain for idle stop and electric drive modes. Employing this layout allows the entire package, including a torsional damper, to fit virtually within the same area as the traditional torque converter.

Another unique component of the Optima Hybrid is the Hybrid-Starter-Generator (HSG). This 8.5 kilowatt starter motor-generator is belt-driven off the Theta II engine and operates at the same 270 volts as the electric traction motor and the lithium polymer battery, but does not provide any tractive effort to the vehicle. In its place, the HSG is used only to start the engine and then to charge the hybrid battery.

One of the main benefits of the hybrid electric powertrain provides is the capability to recover energy lost during braking and store it for use during acceleration and cruising, so when the brake pedal is applied, the engine is decoupled from the traction motor and gives no drag on the vehicle. The motor is then used as a generator to recharge the hybrid battery. Converting the kinetic energy into electrical energy rather than thermal energy through the friction brakes also reduces the wear on the brake linings so they last longer. When conditions require emergency stopping or driving on hills, the extra reliance on regenerative braking allows for the brakes to be more effective.

The Optima Hybrid uses an electronically controlled brake system to determine the driver's braking needs based on the degree of pedal application, which is then converted to a total brake torque requirement. The hybrid system control then detects the current level of battery charge, vehicle speed and other conditions to determine how much regenerative braking is possible under current circumstances. The brake control system then receives the maximum regenerative braking level to manage the friction braking torque so that total net torque is equal to the driver's needs.

Like all other 2011 Optimas, the hybrid uses an Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system that instantly provides boost and only when it is needed during steering maneuvers. Reducing the extra weight compared to an engine-driven hydraulic assist, the EPAS is independent of the engine and also provides assistance when the engine is not running, such as during idle stop or electric drive mode.

The Optima Hybrid also features an electrically-driven air conditioning compressor so that climate control can be maintained even when the engine is off. Like electric power steering, the electrically-driven air conditioning compressor allows for more precise on-demand control reducing the overall load on the powertrain, cutting fuel consumption.

Taking advantage of the instant and continuously available torque from the electric motor, Kia engineers modified its popular 2.4-liter Theta II engine to operate on an Atkinson cycle, raising the compression ratio by 20 percent to maximize its efficiency and achieving a 10-percent fuel saving over a regular Theta engine. This cycle generates a little less torque, but the electric motor compensates for any loss and consequently, the Optima Hybrid's overall power and torque outputs are greater than the regular model.

With the Optima also weighing in as one of the lightest cars in the segment, high performance and outstanding fuel efficiency are a natural result. The lightweight architecture of the new Optima platform, combined with the lightweight lithium polymer battery pack, brings the Optima Hybrid in at just 3,490 pounds, 230 pounds lighter than the 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid.

Beyond the Optima Hybrid's innovative powertrain, Kia's engineers addressed all aspects of vehicle efficiency including aerodynamics and rolling resistance. The Optima Hybrid features unique exterior aero refinements, a lower ride height, an active air flap system, lower drag wheels, and underbody aero tuning to reduce drag, while low rolling resistance tires also help increase efficiency. The Optima Hybrid's drag coefficient is an exceptionally low 0.26, among the best in the world.

The end result of the Optima Hybrid's highly-efficient powertrain, low-rolling resistance tires, and clean aerodynamic signature is truly exceptional highway fuel efficiency, the best of any mid-size hybrid sedan in the market.

In addition to offering consumers class-leading fuel economy, the 2011 Optima Hybrid also delivers high level of style, comfort and refinement. Ensuring Kia's newest addition stands out from the crowd, the hybrid model has unique features to it, including front grille design, 16-inch alloy wheel design, headlamp design, fog lamps, heated outside mirrors, chrome accents on exterior door handles, front and rear lower bumpers and side sills, LED tail lamp design and a rear lip spoiler.

Safety-Minded

M SPORTS PACKAGE FOR THE BMW X3

Sporty driving in the typical mould of the BMW X models is a defining feature of the new BMW X3. It has assumed its predecessor’s mantle as the sportiest drive in its segment, and it is continuing to expand its lead on agility and driving dynamics. For an even more intensive driving experience, from model year 2011 the new BMW X3 will be available with the M Sports package. Developed by BMW M GmbH specifically for this new Sports Activity Vehicle, the package comprises a range of high-end suspension, aerodynamics and exterior/interior components. Highlights include the M Aerodynamic package, special alloy wheels and interior styling features which add to the sense of concentrated driving pleasure.

The new BMW X3 is already an extremely sporty machine, thanks to its all-new suspension. This, together with a longer wheelbase and increased track width compared with the previous model, brings an appreciable improvement in stability and lateral traction in dynamic driving situations. Electric Power Steering, meanwhile, offers typical BMW precision. Alternatively, an optional variable-ratio sports steering system can be specified. The BMW X3 comes as standard with BMW xDrive permanent all-wheel drive, which is calibrated for optimised driving dynamics. The benefits are particularly noticeable during sharp cornering. Optionally, Performance Control can be added for even more agility on tight corners. Also, the new BMW X3 is the first BMW X model to be available with the electronically controlled Dynamic Damper Control system and Drive Dynamic Control, which allows the driver to customise the driving characteristics at the press of a button.
The M Sports package boosts the dynamic driving qualities of the new BMW X3 to new levels and gives them a distinctive visual dimension as well. It includes the M Aerodynamic package, chrome tailpipes and the BMW Individual High-Gloss Shadow Line trim for the side window surrounds and roof rails. The M Aerodynamic package includes body parts painted in body colour at the front, rear and side of the vehicle, while the panel in the rear apron is painted in Dark Shadow metallic.
Sports suspension calibration and 18-inch M alloy wheels, plus Performance Control as an add-on to the standard-specification xDrive all-wheel-drive system, all enhance the excellent driving dynamics of the Sports Activity Vehicle. On the new BMW X3 xDrive35i, they are joined by a Sports automatic transmission, steering wheel shift paddles and variable sports steering, including Servotronic. 19-inch M alloy wheels with mixed tyres are also available, while 20-inch M alloys with mixed tyres can be ordered from the accessories range.

Sports seats with exclusive Pearlpoint fabric/leather upholstery, an M leather-trimmed steering wheel with multifunction buttons including a Cruise Control button, door sills with the M logo and an M footrest for the driver all add to the driving pleasure in the new BMW X3 with M Sports package. The high-end sporty theme is capped off by a BMW Individual roof lining in anthracite, brushed aluminium interior trim, an M shift lever (only for the BMW X3 xDrive 20d with manual transmission) and a stainless steel insert in the loading sill.

The M Sports package will be available for all engine versions of the new BMW X3 from spring 2011. As an exclusive option in conjunction with the M Sports package, Carbon Black metallic paintwork can also be specified as an alternative to the standard paint finishes.

THE NEW X-BOW “R” THRIUMPHS AT THE DTM!

What a performance of the KTM X-BOW Battle at the DTM on the Adria Raceway: No less than 30 (!) starters delivered thrilling and spectacular motorsport, which was not only enjoyed by the fans and team members of the racing series. The people in charge from DMSB and ITR, too, were more than taken by the quality of the sport as well as the fairness and the spectacle at the KTM X-BOW Battle as the organizer Georg Silbermayr reported: „Everyone in charge here at the DTM gave us a sensationally positive feedback. This makes me and actually everyone of us very proud, because it’s not a matter of course for a racing series that hasn’t existed a year ago!“ In the course of the talks it soon emerged that the guest appearance at the DTM on the Adria Raceway would not be the last – more could not be revealed by Georg Silbermayr: „For the next year we have an agreement with our long-standing partner, the Porsche Alpenpokal. Everything that’s beyond this we will arrange within the next two or three weeks, as well as the final rules for the year 2011, so that our drivers and teams can start planning their upcoming season.“ KTM-chairman Hubert Trunkenpolz and KTM-chief designer Gerald Kiska, who both were behind the wheel of their KTM X-BOW in Adria, were also thrilled, not only by the race in Italy, but by the entire season „Our initial thanks goes to all the starters – and there were more than 60 of them spread over the entire year – as well as to Georg Silbermayr, who made this incredible success, aided by his team, possible in the first year already. Thanks very much for that! We are already looking forward to the year 2011, during which we will vigorously support the KTM X-BOW BATTLE once again!“ There was also elation about the successful premiere of the KTM X-BOW „R“, which was driven by Reinhard Kofler to an impressive double victory on its first deployment. The 300 horsepower strong “R” will extend the KTM portfolio already as from spring 2011!

1st Race KTM X-BOW Battle Invitation Race, Adria Raceway, 30th October 2010:

What a season’s finale, as 30 KTM X-BOW hit the racetrack on Saturday afternoon. Raphael Sperrer was ahead during qualifying, but during the race he did not manage to hold Reini Kofler at bay for too long. The Upper Austrian fairly moved out of the way for the KTM research and development driver, who in turn started immediately to break away from the leading field. Behind him there was an intense fight between Zawotec pilot Marko Klein and the „Battle newcomer“ Henk Thuis, who was extremely fast in his Class 3 X-BOW. A spin by Thuis decided the duel and Klein came third after the confident Reini Kofler and Raphael Sperrer Thuis lost a few places through his spin, but fought back to reach fifth place – he just did not manage to catch up with fourth-placed Jiri Heinik. „Michel Vaillant“ gave an impressive performance, sixth place and victory in Class 2 were his reward. But the victory was not easily reached: Guest starter Chris Rendlen, normally driving in the German racing series VLN, gave „Vaillant“ a very hard time over the entire racing distance and he only managed to keep the German behind him with some difficulty. The old hands Pavel Heinik and Klaus Angerhofer followed on places eight and nine, strong tenth and winner of Class 1 was Markus Lungstrass. There followed Gusti Eder and Gerhard Trenker as eleventh and twelfth respectively, before a bike specialist in thirteenth place had a worthy finish to his four wheel premiere: IDM-Superbike racer Stefan Nebel had swapped his KTM RC8R for a X-BOW (his own!) and acquitted himself properly during his debut: Fifth in the hardfought Class 2! Gerald Hierzer could also be satisfied: The Styrian, who only started for the second time conquered 14th place, even before designer Gerald Kiska. After his appearance on the Salzburgring he granted „his“ X-BOW racetrack exercise for the second time and even managed to prevail in front of KTMchairman Hubert Trunkenpolz, who was not happy at all about this and promised revenge for the race on Sunday. But also behind these there was brave driving and fighting. During the race there were more overtaking manoeuvres than during other racing series in an entire season. 27 drivers saw the chequered flag. The entire CCS-team from Jim Gebhardt was unlucky. He drove strongly at the start, but suddenly lost power, the clutch waved goodbye on Siegfried Käser’s car and also the X-BOW of Jürgen Pipp had problems – exceptional bad luck for them with these otherwise so reliable cars.

2nd Race KTM X-BOW Battle Invitation Race, Adria Raceway, 31st October 2010:

The picture book weather of Friday and Saturday simply did not want to continue on the last day of October. And so it was rain and hefty winds characterizing the racing Sunday – and put a frown on many X-BOW driver’s face. 30 cars approaching the first bend, on a wet track, some already saw the “big crash” coming… Far from it! The brilliant performance of ALL pilots resulted in a completely collision-free start – even though the driving was very tough.. Reini Kofler was the only one who could think himself safe after only one lap: He used his entire experience, broke away again and drove his X-BOW „R“ prototype towards a clean start-finish victory. Behind him there was a sensational fight between Raphael Sperrer and Marko Klein, who over many laps caused waves of enthusiasm among the countless Italian fans. In the end it was Marko Klein, who managed to utilize a tiny slip by Sperrer to overtake. Keyword slip: There were some after all, especially when the rain increased and the track got more slippery. The “victims” were especially Jürgen Pipp and Pavel Heinik, who both acquainted themselves with the armco. Luckily both cars were only slightly damaged. A few other pilots went spinning as well, but thankfully without guard rail contact: Hubert Trunkenpolz and Klaus Angerhofer each twice, the Czech old hand Jiri Heinik had to be recovered from the gravel pit and even Battle organizer Georg Silbermayr spun off the track. And so it was that Markus Lungstrass lived up to his reputation as „rain god“ once more. Like on the Slovakiaring he walked on water and managed to get a great fourth place in the overall ranking, which also meant a superior class victory. Behind Henk Thuis, who gave a great debut at the „Battle“, Jim Gebhardt would have deserved the „Man of the Race“-trophy, had there been one. The fast man from Cham drove from the last fos at the start up to sixth place! Chris Rendlen gilded his guest start with a victory in Class 2. Gerald Kiska delivered a spectacular drive in the rain and came a good ninth, Gerald Hierzer was great in eleventh place. Also impressive Ingo Hartmann, who – similar to Markus Lungstrass – might be a real rain specialist and was second-placed Class 1 driver on the slippery course of the Adria Raceway. Where was Superbike-pro Stefan Nebel? He banked on a collision in the first bend and had started from the pit elane – it sadly did not work out (for him) and so he had to contend with 22nd place.

The basic color “Blanc de Blancs” is a custom-developed white metallic paint. It is magnificently accented by the typical Graf Weckerle Imperialwagen Coachline with the integrated Graf Weckerle Imperialwagen brand logo. The Graf Weckerle Coachline emphasizes the waistline of the automotive body, giving it more accentuation and elegance. For the Blanc de Blancs edition, the Coachline is finished in a special shimmering green color and lavishly surrounded by true 24-carat gold-leafing. All exterior detailing is extremely demanding and always executed by a masterful hand.
